I can't update my password to receive messages

I recently changed my password on my mail server (123-reg) and now Thunderbird won't download any new messages. I removed the saved passwords and restarted Thunderbird. I sent an email and it prompted me to put in my password, which I did, and the email sent fine. However, it won't let me access the inbox (even older messages) and it won't prompt me to put in a password for incoming mail. I restarted Thunderbird and my computer and it still has the same issue. I have had problems with memory and harddrive space on my computer recently if that makes any difference. I would really like to get back to having all of my emails in one place rather than half on TB and half on my browser, so if anyone can help, that would be great. I have Windows 7 and I just updated to TB 38 and still having the same issues.

I will guess as 123 really do not explain their setting in any way.

I sat through their tutorial video and in that leaved that they use SSL for their IMAP account. T^hey do not mention that in their general settings and they appear to have skipped over POP entirely.

So here is a guess.

Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > server settings and change the connection security to SSL/TLS (that is what they use for IMAP. and port 993 as that is the SSL port for Secure (SSL) connection. See if that works at all. It might not as I am guess.

Another guess is disable any password aching software you might have like Nortons Vault and disable email scanning in your anti virus.

Thanks but that didn't work. Sorry you had to sit through that video. I'm thinking, would it work if I just uninstalled TB and then reinstalled it? If that's the case, I need to know how to export all of my emails so I have them somewhere. I don't know if I need to put this as a new question or not.

No point uninstalling as your mail and settings are not touched by the process.

More useful might be to try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
