When does this happen? Do you have any gmail programs / add-ons?
I have deleted my gmail account, and removed cookie- tab keeps opening every 5 minutes, so that I end up with dozens of tabs-- Have always had Google as my default search engine--but never had this issue before-- no other Google services/apps
Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove Gmail / Google Anything. Now do the same in the computers Programs Folder.
Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

After the problem is fixed, Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
You can check the home page setting
- Firefox > Preferences > General > Startup: Home page
Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Gmail not in Extensions--or add-ons-- running malware software. will also delete FF & re-install
What is your default email program?
Looks like this is a Mac Problem--happening in FF and Safari, and only on specific computer --off to the Genius Bar--Thanks for your help, all
Good luck. Let us know what happens.
