Thunderbird 38.7.2 on Windows 10. Long time user, primarily Gmail. In the last few months, sometimes Thunderbird seems to be connecting to gmail to read my mail when I start it, but no mail is loaded. I can see the mail if I go to gmail through my browser. I try closing and re-opening Thunderbird, using the Get Messages button, and can see it connecting to pop.gmail.com and the green progress bar goes to the end but it never reads the mail. Then at some point it will just work. This happens sporadically, not all the time. I make sure I have a good intenet connection (I'm at home most of the time when this happens). Just upgraded to v45 and same problem. Is there any problem with Avast? That's what I use for my security.

Figured it out, it was Avast firewall interfering.
