The print dialog shows obsolete printers, so how do I remove them?
When I print from within Thunderbird, the dialog that opens shows a multitude of printers, most of which are obsolete and no longer in my system. They are no longer in the Windows 8 "Devices and Printers" window showing what printers are in the system. So, how do I get Thunderbird to delete those obsolete printers?

I'd suggest you note which obsolete printers you can see. Their names will be useful.
Now go to Tools|Options|Advanced|General and click on the Config Editor button.
Promise it you'll be careful, if challenged.
Enter the name of an unwanted printer into the search box at the top. It will show all the settings relevant to that printer. You can select and delete them all.
If that doesn't work out, just type in print and see what comes up, then pick through the list and remove the deadwood.
