I've looked a the help on this which only says the general setting is used --- it doesn't tell me what the default setting is, ie, allow? ask? block? So, what I want to know is, simply, what is the default setting? Is the item allowed or not? Thanks for your help.

Hi Burt, it varies. When the "Use default" checkbox is checked, a grayed dot usually shows you the default. But not for:

Plugins

The default permission of Always Activate, Ask to Activate, or Never Activate is set on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. You'll see the permission selector on the right. Most will be "Ask to Activate".
