What replaces Flash for programs that require it when Firefox has disallowed it?

When I am working in Firefox with AOL running, I frequently get statements telling me that Firefox has blocked the old-fashioned Flash application from working, then gives me options to allow it or continue blocking. So, if Flash is blocked, then the question above applies. I know that some programs and sites expect Flash to work, so Im wondering what Firefox has that replaces Flash? (I also know that Apple dislikes Flash, even though some sites require its use.)

Firefox does not have any built-in replacement for Flash.

Sites that use Flash only for streaming videos often will try an HTML5 player first, which is the preferred method these days. Sites that use Flash as a programming platform, or who haven't converted how they handle media, may go straight to Flash.

Let's say you have Flash set to "Ask to Activate" as your general permission setting. Then sites cannot use Flash until you approve it.

With that setting, the site usually assumes Flash is available and either waits for you to approve it, or the time allowed to start Flash expires and it goes to Plan B. Plan B might be to try some other method to play the media or it might be to display an error message.

If you don't want to use Flash on that site, there's a problem because there isn't a convenient way to hide the presence of the Flash plugin from the site to force it to try something else. (An add-on can sometimes do this when needed.)

So... that's the state of play so to speak. Are there particular sites that present an issue?
