Urgent Firefox Patch Download December 14, 2016

more options

I received a pop-up "Urgent Firefox Patch" Download Now notification this morning Wednesday December 14, 2016. When the download ran a very Non-Standard pop-up window appeared referencing a "ping" and began downloading directly to a Win32 location. Is this Malware? And what can be done about it? I am running Windows 7.

hi, this is a scam tactic that is trying to trick you into installing malware, so don't download or execute this kind of stuff just because of a popup or redirect on a website! updates are handled automatically by firefox so you don't have to download anything for that (and you can always initiate a manual check for updates in the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > about firefox).

we suspect this is coming form "malvertising" (=ads placed on legitimate websites that redirect you to this fraudulent message), so using an adblocking addon like https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/ would also help with that.

I found a fake Firefox update

Too late on the downloading part. It happened quick and coffee hadn't taken effect yet. Should a standard Norton Full Scan fix this or could it be more malicious?

to be on the safe side, next to the security software already in place, please also run a scan with various other security tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner & eset online one-time scanner.

If you only downloaded the (fake) firefox-patch.js file and not tried to run it then you should be safe and delete it.
