Is there a way to get Firefox to automatically check for, and choose, a secure version of a webpage (HTTPS://)?

Hi
I recommend that you try this well known and respected add-on, HTTPS Everywhere.
I hope that this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look into a different solution for you.
You can use the Enforce Encryption extension to have a "Encrypted connection enforced" section in "Page Info > Security".
- Tools > Page Info > Security: Encrypted connection enforced? (Start enforcing,Stop enforcing)
- Enforce Encryption: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/enforce-encryption/
