Several times a day, thunderbird (52.3.0) will freeze right after I send mail, giving me the spinning beachball of death. I have to force quit and start it again. I'm running MacOS 10.12.6

No. same issue.

For now, sadly, the solution has been to switch to the Outlook mail client.

And I'm back to thunderbird. Outlook couldn't send mail, and mail.app...well. I deleted my ~/Library/Thunderbird and redid all my accounts and filters and we'll see if that works.

Is it still freezing several times a day?

Doesn't seem to be so far.

And there it goes... freezes.

It has frozen probably 5 or 6 times in 5 hours today.

To be safe, I ran hardware diag on the mac, and it did not reveal any issues.

I'm glad to find this thread. I just wanted to add that for me, running on latest MacOS, this problem appeared only in the last few months. I've been running Thunderbird on my Mac for years, so it's quite clear to me that this is a recent bug. Unfortunately, I can't say if it started with a Thunderbird upgrade or an OS upgrade.

I am (just today) running in safe mode to see if that cures the problem.

I also realized we switched to AD authentication, too. Don't know if it is related.

I'm not using Active Directory, so that's not it. Have you tried safe mode?

more options

Safe mode doesn't help. I even deleted the App and my Thunderbird data dir, and re-installed and recreated from scratch. Didn't help.

Just confirming: Had a freeze today while in safe mode.

Another question for you: This seems recent to me, as in last few months. I wonder if it's easy to go back to an earlier version of Thunderbird. Any idea how to do that? Looks like there have been more than a half-dozen releases in 2017.

When did this start for you?

Thanks, F.

I have this problem, too. Previous versions of TB locked up, too, but rarely. I've used TB for years. This kind of thing is very annoying, to put it mildly, and the frequency seems to be increasing. HELP MOZILLA!!!

Does it happen in safe mode?

What is size of Trash and Trash.msf files in your thunderbird profile?

more options

Yes, it happens in safe mode. My trash files are 28, 43 and 117M, and the .msf files are 35k 3.1 and 3.8m

I have this issue too. Can't say when it started as I'm only using TB for one e-mail account and it's always had issues. Trying to turn off the "Global Search and Indexer" and restarting to see if that helps, per a thread on apple support. I've upgraded to the latest version in the hope that would sort things out - the issue is just as bad. I'm running Sierra on an iMac.
