How do I keep advertisements from being the first category to come up when I do a search?

It is a self explanatory question. When I type in a search using, eg., www.freecreditreport.com, the first results that come up are advertisements for companies whos' spelling isn't even close, offering similar services, but not the one I want. I must scroll down through all of them to get to the actual results of the search. How can I go directly to results without the advertisements?

You can install an ad-blocking add-on such as https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin

Also, do you recall installing the "EasyPDFCombine" add-on? (You shared your extensions list, to the right of your question, Question Details > More System Details.) In case one of your extensions is causing this problem, it would be a good idea to review them. Here's how:

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious? If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox before the change takes effect. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
