Sound comes on automatically with each browser window; how do I turn it off so it doesn't come on?

I used to be able to control sounds with the operating system volume control. Now, Mozilla has the sound come on with each window/tab I open. I am tired of turning them off. Is there some setting I can change so the sound does not automatically come on?

Try this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-autoplay/

Let me know if it resolves your problem.

Unfortunately, after the first couple of times the extension no longer worked. I am still turning off the sound with every window I open. Big pain.

Go to about:config by typing it in your URL bar, ignore the warning about warranty and continue, using the search box on the top of about:config search for media.autoplay.enabled double-click on it to set it to false, then Restart Firefox.
