When I open Firefox I often get a message advising me that I'm running low on memory and asks me to close firefox. On checking in Task Manager I found multiple versions running simultaneously. It used to be 5, now it's 6 versions.

I have that as well but I think your is more closely related to RAM is less then what all your apps need in total and is causing FF to say it's has low RAM. Did you make sure there isn't something else running that excessive taking RAM besides FF?

You may see three or more Firefox processes running.

  • one process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
  • one or more content processes
  • one process for the compositor thread (Windows;graphics)

You can look in "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) to see the current multi-process state.

  • "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" -> "Application Basics":
    Multiprocess Windows
    Web Content Processes

You can modify multi-process settings and set number of content processes to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4).

  • Options/Preferences -> General -> Performance
