Why can't I see the message body anymore?

Suddenly, I see the list of messages in my Inbox, but no message body above them, as I always did. I was always able to drag up or down, to reveal how much of the message body I want to see. Not today, however. I am forced to click on each message in order to open each email. Why did the ability to see some of the messages disappear? How can I get that back?
