Firefox 59.0.1 Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

Firefox keeps changing the default program for opening txt files from TextEdit to Console, and removing TextEdit from the "open with" dialog. Changing it back via Get Info and applying it universally only solves the issue until you open Firefox again. Others are reporting this also:

A fix, reported several places, is to go to about:config and change the "security.sandbox.content.level" setting to 2 from 3.

Is this recommended/wise? Is Mozilla aware of this issue and working on a fix?

Thanks

Hi, am not sure that we have heard your cure. Have heard of some changing defaults but not many. It does not hurt to change the sandbox. Should make it temp though until a new release.

Can I ask that you please report this and the solution.

Pkshadow: I've tried creating a bugzilla account but I'm not getting the confirmation email to continue creating it.

cor-el: As I said, changing the default application back only persists until the next time you open Firefox; then Firefox changes the default for txt files to Console again.

Others have reported the identical problem:

And the sandbox fix is reported several places by people who have experienced the TextEdit/Console swap and by others who have experiened their jpg or png default app being changed. I, too, have experienced that -- the default app for jpg being changed from Preview to Firefox -- but that particular glitch is not happening this week to me. This week it's only the default app for txt files being changed from TextEdit to Console everytime I open Firefox -- and never if I don't open Firefox.

Did you try OnyX to cleanup the launch services?

I have not, at this juncture, installed any third-party software to try to fix the problem that folks have traced to being caused by Firefox. Logically, I don't see why fixing the problem with OnyX would stop Firefox from recreating the problem next time I opened Firefox, as happens everytime I "fix" the problem with OS X's own Get Info/Open With/Change All. I think I would first try changing the "security.sandbox.content.level" setting from 3 to 2, which multiple reports say has "fixed" the problem -- but I'll only do that after seeing a consensus here that that is not an unwise move. Thanks

Did you already tried to apply security.sandbox.content.level = 2 ?

Interesting, no? Since I can't comment there, can you please add there that the same problem or a closely related problem is changing the default app for txt files from TextEdit to Console (without any dragging or save-as-ing), and removing TextEdit from the "open with" dialog, and that no amount of forcing it back to TextEdit with "Change All" stops Firefox from doing it again the next time you open Firefox -- and link to this, which is another person reporting this exact thing. Thanks

No, I didn't yet apply security.sandbox.content.level = 2. I want to know what lowering that security level exposes me to.

Literally every time I open Firefox it switches my default .txt program from TextEdit to Console. So bizarre. On the other hand, if I don't open Firefox, the default always remains as it should: TextEdit. How/where do I get this information to the correct people? Firefox 59.0.1 - Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

Usually on a windows system it is backup profile, bookmarks, uninstall and delete everything. Create a new Profile and move back non-corrupted data.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem. Never work with original files.

I'm having this issue on a Mac. As you suggested, I created a bug report, four days ago. Nothing more has occurred there yet.

Hi, ya well 4 days is not enough time for anything. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version New Firefox released this date 59.0.2 what was fixed : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/59.0.2/releasenotes/?utm_source=firefox-browser&utm_medium=firefox-browser&utm_campaign=whatsnew

Yes lower the sandbox...................... When issue is fixed, raise the sandbox................ You have a firewall and A/V program. You do not do the things I do or go to the places I do or run the things I do. You have no worries to lower the sandbox.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
