1 Firefox tab uses 3x more memory than Avidemux coding an MP4
As the image shows - I have FF open (1 tab, already loaded) and avidemux converting an ISO to an MP4 in the background. FF's 1 open tab is using more than triple the amount of memory that avidemux is using to transcode a video
It's a joke, god knows what's going on in the background but this browser is dodgy... constantly updates itself and the version even if updates are set to never update, never download and never check - it STILL updates versions the SECOND its launched, EVERY single time.. update, update, update, update, no matter what you do... UPDATE UPDATE... It's as rigged as it gets
The ONLY way to stop it updating is to completely disable your internet connection and then launch it then delete and turn off all the HIDDEN update settings from the about:config. UNless you have these deleted and turned off, FF will ALWAYS update on EVERY launch, regardless of your settings/wishes.
I'm currently on FF 54 as I managed to FINALLY stop this determined thing updating itself... although it was difficult! All of the newer versions use even more memory and have many processes running even if you only have a single tab open - WTF does FF need 6 processes using tons of memory and literally draining resources just to open 1 god damn tab?
Before anyone even mentions updating or refreshing forget it. I've performed tons of clean installs and done many refreshes and it's never helped a thing, always the same problem
FF is a joke, theres no way its using all these processes and all this massive amounts of memory of my behalf (1 open tab)
SO WTF IS IT DOING?

You should have been moved to the Extended Release Version a year ago. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switch-to-firefox-extended-support-release-esr 55.0 is unsupported and a security risk.
So with what you have said and do not want to do I can not offer any support you as per your instructions.
Yeah WHATEVER MAN!!
What a suprise... I need to UPDATE to get any help!!
LOL
In case you didnt read my post Ive had enough of that crap with the browser
Anyway, every god damn version after the mid 50's is completely UNUSABLE because the POS has so many processes running and hogs so much of the resources
Firefox is a POS! the only reason I dont jack thise piece of crap is because its the best of a crap bunch
I'm gonna repeat what I ended my opening post with -
I DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL THIS PIECE OF CRAP IS DOING WHEN ITS HOGGING ALL OF MY RESOURCES AND I ONLY HAVE 1 ALREADY LOADED TAB OPEN - BUT IT ISN'T DOING ANYTHING I'M ASKING IT TO DO!!!!!!
HAVING 1 ALREADY LOADED TAB OPEN USES MORE THAN TRIPLE THE RESOURCES AVIDEMUX USES TO TRANSCODE AN ISO TO AN MP4!!...
WTF IS IT DOING??!!!!!!
Gewysig op
You know what.... that not even POSSIBLE!!!
It cant POSSIBLY be using so many resources... unless its doing something like MINING FOR BITCOINS!!!
Or something similar!!
Theres no god damn way FF can be using so many resources
WTF HAVE MOZILLA INJECTED IN TO THIS PROGRAM????
Hi A.Jay,
I've just tested in Windows 10 with one tab open doing some browsing on Amazon, and Firefox hovers between 200-250MB.
I see that you used a different operating system to post your question. We'll need some more info about your Firefox setup. Can you please do the following for us? Go to [=] > Help > Troubleshooting Information then click Copy text to Clipboard. Open a reply to this post, and go to Edit > Paste to paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.
Also, could you please tell us what website you're on, when the memory issue occurs?
Hi Chris
I havent changed my OS, just my user string. I'm on FF 54.0b5 x64 Win 7
Anything later than 54 has even more processes running (More things to spy and constantly communicate with mozilla no doubt) and the resource hog is much worse than it is now

What a surprise - multiple plugins enabled that I havent installed and cant disable or remove
SCREENSHOTS - installed without permission, enabled without permission. No entry in the extensions section, unable to disable, unable to remove
I dont even want to know what that is, just the name of it makes me dislike it. I'm looking for another browser
EDIT: I knew I;d heard of tha screenshots crap before, I disabled it ages ago, it still disabled no in my config
But guess what - MOZILLA dont want it disabled and this craps all about what MOZILLA want to do on MY computer so, as shown in the above settings - even though I have it set to DISABLED - it's STILL EN-FUCKING-ABLED!!!
Gewysig op
And if that wasnt bad enough from the SNEAKY MOZILLA RATS!!!
What else have they done??
There WAS a setting that would automatically disable the SCREENSHOTS
It WAS called "privacy.resistFingerprinting"
Obviously this stops FINGERPRINTING, but it also disables the screrenshot addon
Guess what!!!???
REMOVED FROM THE SETTINGS!!!!!!!
NO LONGER AVAILABLE!!!!
CANNOT TURN OFF SCREENSHOTS + FINGERPRINT RESISTANCE/DISABLING SCREENSHOTS OPTION REMOVED BY DIRTY FILTHY MOZILLA SCUM!!!!!!!
These dirty bastards are RIFE - theyre doing WHATEVER THEY WANT - WHENEVR THEY WANT - REGARDLESS OF WHETHER WE WANT IT TO HAPPEN OR NOT
Constant updates AGAINST USERS WISHES FORCED SPYING ADDONS Removal of settings to disable SPYING MASSIVE resource hog / Unidentified high usage/ Many unneccessary processes running, amount of processes increasing on every release
THESE BASTARDS ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH!!!! WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING???

You can set the maximum number of content processes that current releases use via the Options/Preferences page or via about:config in older Firefox versions.
You may see three or more Firefox processes running.
- one process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
- one or more content processes set via:
Options/Preferences -> General -> Performance
remove checkmark: [ ] "Use recommended performance settings"
about:config => dom.ipc.processCount - one process for the compositor thread (Windows;graphics)
You can look in "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) to see the current multi-process state.
- "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" -> "Application Basics":
Multiprocess Windows

A.Jay, can you please refrain from the insults towards Mozilla. You can still get your point across without use of it.

Gewysig op
Sure, as soon as MOZILLA stops draining all my resources doing whatever the hell its doing, stops installing extensions that I DONT WANT, allows me to disable things under MY OWN CHOICE, and starts to ABIDE TO THE SETTINGS THAT I HAVE SET - NOT DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE BECAUSE THATS WHAT MOZILLA WANT IT TO DO, and also when it stops TAKING AWAY PRIVACY SETTINGS THAT ALLOW OUR BROWSER TO BE FINGERPINTED AND WHEN IT ALLOWS THE DISABLING OF THE GOD DAMN SCREENSHOTS - THAT RE NO DOUBT CAPTURING MY GOD DAMN BROWSING AND SENDING IT ALL BACK TO THEM!!!!.....
Maybe THEN will I stop insulting SCUM OF THE EARTH MOZILLA!!!
It's only recently we found out SCUM KASPERSKY are working with the RU governemt and spying on evry single users devices
Would NOT surprise me if SCUM MOZILLA are doing something exactly the same!!!!
In fact not only would it not surprise me - THATS WHAT I THINKS HAPPENING
Theres no way on earth all this shit this browser is doing is kosher, its DEFINITELY DOING SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Version: 54.0b4 Build ID: 20170501133120 Update Channel: beta
LOL. That's an old beta release. How in the world did you end up on that? :)
I can assure you that Mozilla is not spying on you. The reason you're seeing more than one firefox.exe is because Firefox runs web content for all tabs separately from the main Firefox process for increased security and performance. Using multiple content processes can further increase performance and minimize the impact of content process crashes. It's actually a big security feature. You can adjust it in the Options panel.
If you're seeing excessive memory use, the cause could be any number of things, from a third-party extension to the website you are viewing. Let's figure out what's causing it in your case, then fix it. In your original post, you said "I've performed tons of clean installs and done many refreshes and it's never helped a thing". Could you tell us exactly which steps you followed?
And we'd still like to know which site you are on when the problem occurs, so we can try reproduce the issue. If the site is playing video, the memory usage you're reporting is actually pretty low. On the other hand, if you're browsing Amazon, your numbers are a little high.
In the meantime, check out the following article: Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix.
Like I said anything after mid 50's is unusable for me, tons of processes running and mega memory usage, instantly on a clean install with just google open
PIus I was perfectly happy with my browser working and looking the way it did, not only did I not want any changes past 54/55 but I didn't like any of the new changes so I keep things exactly how I want them to be, not how MOZILLA wants them to be. Updates, new features, new appearance, security - shove them all, not interested
I got this version from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
I use the browser that works and looks the way I want it to - not how MOZILLA wants it to - I dont care what number it is, what channel its on or what year its from, it works, it's compatible with all the extensions I want to use and I like it, so its staying
It's high usage all the time, nothing matters, I've only got this page open now and my usage is over 1GB - it's a joke
I never posted here for help anyway - if multiple clean installs and refreshes and multiple different versions all have the same issue then I'm wasting my time - the answer to the problem is simple - MOZILLA
The reason I posted is to draw attention to this SHIT that MOZILLA is doing
Sometimes people use Beta releases without knowing they aren't intended for end-users, or use an older release without knowing the security risks, so we just want to make sure you're aware of the risks.
I don't have Windows 7, but I tried replicating your Firefox setup (version, extensions, and some preferences) on my Windows 10 machine, so I could reproduce the issue. I recorded a screencast of it here:
As you can see, the memory usage hovers around 240MB, not 1GB. This leads me to suspect that the cause is somewhere outside of Firefox is affecting its memory usage, which would explain why refreshing Firefox does not fix it.
Have you tried disabling Hardware Acceleration, and making sure your drivers are up to date? Try the instructions in the following article: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL
Hi Chris I appreciate the help, but I tried that some time ago and it didn't help.
It wasnt disabled on my current browser but I've done it and no change. Multiple versions are all the same, with or without add ons, even in safe mode
Theres no need for all these processes, all these addons we dont want and cant disable, even if we do disable them they stay enabled, fingerprint resisting removed, constant updates regardless of the settings and users expressly stated wishes
If there wasnt all that then I could look at the high usage in another light. When you put all the above in to the hat along with unexplained high memory usage on all versions them my trust in mozilla dissipates
I did some digging to help answer your concerns, and here's what I found...
Reasons for processes:
There are three reasons for multiple processes: security, stability, and performance.
In multiprocess Firefox, content processes will be sandboxed. A well-behaved content process won’t access the filesystem directly; it will have to ask the main process to perform the request. At that time, the main process can verify that the request is safe and that it makes sense. Consequently, the sandbox for content processes can be quite restrictive. The hope is that this arrangement will make it much harder to craft exploitable security holes for Firefox.
Currently, a crash in the code running a web page will take down the entire browser. With multiprocess Firefox, only the content process that crashed will be killed.
Firefox is able to run its event loop while JavaScript and layout are running in a content process. But unlike threading, the UI code has no access to content DOM or or other content data structures, so there is no need for locking or thread-safety.
For more information, check out these two article:
- https://billmccloskey.wordpress.com/2013/12/05/multiprocess-firefox/
Reasons for each extension:
Some add-ons are referred to as System Add-ons. They are listed in the Troubleshooting Information page but not in the Add-ons Manager. They are features included in Firefox that are installed as extensions, so they can be updated separately from Firefox.
- Application Update Service Helper: This checks for characteristics in your setup that will affect your need to update. For instance, Firefox 48 crashes at startup if websense is installed. This feature would detect if websense is installed for users of 47 and earlier, and if so, not update Firefox yet. For more information, see https://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/04/application-update-service-helper/
- Firefox Screenshots: This is how the Screenshots feature is implemented. For more information, see Take screenshots in Firefox
- Multi-process staged rollout: See https://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/
- Pocket: This is how the Pocket feature is implemented. See Save web pages for later with Pocket for Firefox
- Web Compat: Similar to the Application Update Service Helper, Mozilla may identify compatibility issues and ship a fix for that issue to all Firefox versions without having to create and distribute a new Firefox release. For more information, see https://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/04/application-update-service-helper/
Hopefully that eases some of your concerns. :) When I did the test above, I also had those add-ons, including the extra add-ons you installed. Are you running any 3rd party software, such as the following:
- Security software, firewalls, or internet safety
- Virus or malware checkers
- Backup or disk utility or cleaner software
If yes, can you provide the names of those software products?
Chris you can post the official 'reasons' why mozilla need to have these processes running and why they have these hidden features running that we cant see or disable but if we take everything large organizations say as truth where do you think we would be then
Instead I use my own logic, reasoning and heuristics combined with personal exerience and knowledge to determine my own view of things
Any process I have ever run, even the most resource intensive ones like transcoders or games only need 1 process - why does the new FF need SIX!? - NONE of the other versions have needed anything like that. Every release from 55+ needs MORE and MORE processes - whatthe hell are they all doing!?
Also Incase MOZILLA didnt realize theres a handy tool for taking screenshots that's been built in to every PC for DECADES - its called alt + print screen!?
Why do MOZILLA need to intorduce a feature to take SCREENSHOTS of EVERYONES BROWSING!?
There is NO reason to do it - only for MALICIOUS purposes. How may people need to take a god damn SCREENSHOT of all of the pages they visit!? NONE... thats how many!!!
So a 100% USELESS feature that NOBODY WANTS or needs has been forcefully installed on EVERY USERS BROWSER and not only that - the feature is HIDDEN, it CANNOT be removed, turned off or even disabled and as such is ALWAYS ACTIVE. Further from that, there WAS 2 settings that could disable the SCREENSHOTS - 1 of them was REMOVED and the other, even when set to DISABLE SCREENSHOTS - is IGNORED by firefox and MOZILLA and the SCREENSHOTS is STILL ACTIVE THROUGH 100% OF ALL USERS BROWSING!!!!!!!
I WISH I COULD JACK THIS RIGHT OFF MY PC BUT I WOULD ONLY HAVE TO GO TO ANOTHER SPYING DIRT SCUM BROWSER THAT IS EITHER JUST AS BAD OR EVEN WORSE!!!!!
This a disgrace why people put up with this is beyond me
[Profanity removed by moderator. Please read Mozilla Support rules and guidelines, thanks.]
Gewysig op
Note that Firefox had the feature to take a (full screen) screenshot since 2012 as part of the builtin developer tools.
- https://www.ghacks.net/2012/11/02/take-screenshots-straight-from-firefoxs-developer-toolbar/
The Firefox screenshot extension only make it possible (easier) to only take the screenshot of a selected area.
The Windows tools usually take a screenshot of the full desktop or of the current Firefox window and obviously can't include content that is not in the view port.
Awesome, so the SCUM have been at it since 2012
Any time a SCUM organization introduces a 100% USELESS FEATURE on EVERY SINGLE USER ON THE PLANETS BROWSER - then makes it IMPOSSIBLE to switch off, removes the settings to disable it - AND has it programmed in to the code to IGNORE uses express wishes to disable it
As in: extensions.screenshots.system-disabled - TRUE IGNORED!!!!!!
privacy.resistfingerprinting (THAT ALSO DISABLES SCREENSHOTS)
REMOVED
Then theres something FISHY going on!!!!!
Oh what a shame you couldnt actually focus right on the browser with alt+prtscr, so you would have to spend half a fraction of a second in paint to click n cut the area you wanted
Also theres ANOTHER tool in widnwos called the SNIPPING TOOL - snips ANYTHING ANYONBE WANTS. Surely thy have similar things on Linux and I know they do on mobiles
But none of that enough for MOZILLA, MOZILLA wants SCREENSHOTS so theyve deemed it an absolute NECESSITY since 2012 for EVERY FIREFOX USER ON THE PLANET TO HAVE SCREENSHOTS INSTALLED ON THEIR BROWSER
Mozilla can say WTF they want
"Oooh this is a NECESSITY"
"Ooooh we don't use this for SPYING, we would never do that!"
"Been here since 2012.. don't worry about it"
"Don't worry about us making it HIDDEN and you not being able to see it, we'll look after it"
"Don't worry about it ALWAYS being enabled, regardless of you REPEATEDLY attempting to turn it off"
"Don't worry about us programming the code specifically to IGNORE your wishes to turn it off, even when you have it to DISABLE, we are gonna leave it on, you need it!"
