I looked in the menu customization on the toolbar, but no blue star there I want to default to bookmarks menu and get rid of all other bookmark lists. Does the blue star icon do that?

Hi bernieb2, the blue star indicates that the current page is bookmarked. I don't think you will find that so useful for what you are looking for, but let me go into a little detail.

Page Actions

The right end of the address bar is called the Page Actions area. The ••• menu, and nearby icons, are for the current page. This is where you'll see an empty star, if the current page is not bookmarked, or a blue star, if it is. That star icon relates to the current page only and doesn't provide access to your bookmarks list.

Browser Actions

The icons on the rest of the toolbar generally have broader scope. Firefox 57 introduced the idea of a Library icon that combined bookmarks, history, downloads, and other things. But there still are separate icons to make access more direct.

You can add the bookmarks menu button () using either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

Hopefully that will give you the access you're looking for.

Success?

The only icons there are on the toolbar are the empty star with the line underneath and the three bar menu. I unpinned the library, where it evidently default saves bookmarks. don't know what these or any other icons mean. I only know I can't save bookmarks to the menu or move them there from other lists.

Hi bernieb2, "Saved to Library" is a general phrase. I'll show you where they are saved.

Click this icon on the toolbar:

Then click "Other Bookmarks" to expand that sub-menu.

By default, new bookmarks are saved to that list.

To move existing bookmarks from Other Bookmarks to the main level of the menu:

(1) Call the Library window using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks

(2) By default, Firefox should show the Other Bookmarks list on the right side

(3) Select everything using either:

  • Ctrl+a
  • single-left-click the first bookmark, then press Shift+End to select everything down to the bottom of the list

(4) "Cut" the bookmarks to the clipboard using either:

  • Ctrl+X
  • right-click > Cut

(5) In the left column, click Bookmarks Menu

(6) On the right side, right-click a blank part of the list and Paste

That should transfer everything from the Other Bookmarks to the Bookmarks Menu.
