Thunderbird 60.8.0 crashing sending mail on Mac OS 10.14.3

I'm reporting this issue with my current version of Thunderbird and Mac OS, which are the latest versions available, but it also applies to previous versions.

The bug has been there for months, but I can't say precisely for how long, maybe 7 months.

Versions: Thunderbird 60.8.0, Mac OS 10.14.3

Behavior: multiple times a day, when sending an email with the main Thunderbird window minimized, the app just crashes.

What happens: the mail is sent correctly, the mail window closes, but then I'm unable to restore Thunderbird main window (clicking with the right mouse on the icon it says that it's not working correctly... when I manage to restore it, it's all greyed out, showing the Apple spinning wheel, and I have to force the exit).

I have no Mozilla Crash Reports, because it doesn't ever shows up.

I have captured a Spindump (2,7 mb), if it can be useful.

Thanks, Roberto

re :I have no Mozilla Crash Reports, because it doesn't ever shows up.

Check you have this option enabled.

  • Thunderbird > Preferences > Advanced > 'Data Choices' tab

Crash reporter:

  • select checkbox: 'Enable Crash reporter'
  • click on 'OK'

When it happens again......... Generated Crash reports are here: Help > TRoubleshooting Information Scroll down to Crash Reports section. Copy the crash report id and paste into this question in forum.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

The Crash Reporter was disabled, so I enabled it.

Today I had another crash, but the Crash Reporter hasn't showed up. No crash reports were generated under Troubleshooting Information.

After I force the quit, it opens the Mac Os Problem Report window. Does it contain useful information?

Is there anything else I can try?

I also tried to:

- Delete Thunderbird - Delete the Profile folder - Reinstall Thunderbird from scratch

Have you tried safe mode?

On windows the left shift key being held invokes it if it is held when starting Thunderbird.

often it is add-ons and graphics hardware that causes crashes. The sort of hard crash that appear before the Mozilla crash reporter can kick in are most often graphics or hardware issues. Eeen to the point of hard disk errors at the hardware level.

Safe mode disables a lot of the higher level hardware acceleration that goes with graphics, so try that first.

Next check the hard disk for errors The steps shown in 1 here should do it. https://www.anysoftwaretools.com/check-mac-hard-drive-health/

This should eliminate errors in allocations that can generate invalid program files and invalid data.

Hi,

I tried with safe mode, and I also checked for disk errors, but unfortunately Thunderbird is still crashing.

It doesn't happen every time I send a mail, so it's not easy to reproduce.

But it still happens.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Roberto

Does it happen with version 68? https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/

I didn't know there was a new release, thank you!

I'll give it a try.

Unfortunately after installing version 68 Thunderbird lost italian localization, and it seems there's no way to get it back.

However, if it works, I will keep it this way!

I'll let you know.

Thank you, Roberto

Hello,

I had no luck, Thunderbird is still crashing with version 68.

I have the crash report, if needed.

Please post the crash 'report id' number.

Hello,

I have no report id. As said before, unfortunately Mozilla Crash Report is not working: even if i enabled it, is not showing up after the crash event.

However, I managed to save a text document with the crash report information from Mac, you can download from it here:

I hope it's useful, thank you very much.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for the information. It seems my problem exactly.

Does that mean that the Sent folder will not be accessible from other devices? If so, I can't go that way.

Thank you, Roberto

I have exactly the same problem. It's been many updates, and still happening. isn't there any way that Mozilla can resolve this bug? seems like a major thing for mac users, and I can't believe there are no more Mac users complaining about this problem. i'm using version 60.9.0 with iOS Catalina. And this continues to be an issue. Thanks!

re : try setting your Sent folder to be under Local Folders - Does that mean that the Sent folder will not be accessible from other devices?

Yes. It will only be in Thunderbird profile on your computer. But you could back it up to OneDrive or usb for travel purposes.
