Lockwise started showing up, can I go back to old method?

I just went to Firefox 70.0.1 and then checked on some saved passwords. Got a new screen that is called Lockwise? Been using FF since around 2004 and would just as soon have the old version. Thought it might have been an addon that got loaded, but that is not one of my addons. Question is can I get rid of Lockwise or it it built into FF? Wish they (Firefox) had warned me about this when updating. Then they are forcing me into having a Firefox account and trying their best to make me sync passwords which I don't want to sync anything. Besides, I only use FF on this PC. Mozilla is getting into too much cloud storing issues for me.

Also, it seems FF started syncing just about all my data, passwords, bookmarks......... when I started an account. I went into options and stopped by unchecking all they checked without asking and did a disconnect. But there was a message that seem to say they already had sync and I couldn't delete their data they synced.

Yes, both are normally the same account although you can have multiple Firefox Accounts each with its own email address. Sync needs a Firefox Account, but a Firefox Account can be used for more services.

Hi Jer, the Lockwise interface design has replaced the built-in Password Manager pop-up dialog. That doesn't require you to create or connect to a Firefox Account, unless you want to copy your logins to other installations of Firefox through the cloud. Only want logins saved locally? Don't set up Sync. You're all good.

If you already set up Sync accidentally:

Go to the Options page, Firefox Account section, and disconnect. If Firefox asks whether you want to delete your data, DO NOT DELETE. That option will remove data from your PC and you'll need to dig up a backup.

Thanks, it seems that by getting an account I started sync and their default was everything checked. I unchecked them all and did a disconnect. I did read the message and almost did a delete. Their message made it sound like I would delete data on my computer, but not on their (Firefox) side. That made me think them guys already grabbed my passwords and other stuff that was checked by default.

I didn't check the boxes for deleting, but almost did. I have an Acronis image I did right prior to updating FF to 70.0.1. If FF did already grab my password, bookmarks etc, they should let me delete on their end.

In addition to the above :

Just in case you want the legacy password manager back, you can do this :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

signon.management.overrideURI

and set its value to blank

Then close and restart Firefox.

(should you want to revert to Lockwise, you can just reset the value)

Hi Jer, I don't know the best way to flush out the data stored in the Sync cloud server. I know that certain kinds of password resets will flush the data, but someone might know of a simpler way.

Cool I tried it out and what you said works great, then I put it back to Lockwise figured I would give it a try. Good to know, for now anyway, I could go back.

What is really irritating is when I was forced into signing up for account they assumed I wanted to sysn data to cloud and also assumed what data I wanted to sync. Bad Mozilla, not everyone has that cloud trust- remember Equifax.

I know I am suspicious and not trusting, but that comes from the almost 40 years I spent as a system software developer and being an old fart.

Lockwise works with uploading names and passwords to Sync by having the 'Logins' item checked in the Sync settings. If you do not want to Sync logins then it is sufficient to uncheck this item.

If you reset or change the password of the Sync account then this invalidates all data stored on the Sync server because only the original password is able to decrypt this data.

Step 3: Install or set up Firefox Lockwise

   Manage passwords on Firefox desktop with Firefox Lockwise
   Install Firefox Lockwise on iOS
   Install Firefox Lockwise on Android 

Step 4: Enable auto-fill

Firefox Lockwise can enter your login credentials automatically on apps if you enable this feature so that you don't have to keep manually entering them. First, you have to enable autofill on your phone.

   Enable auto-fill on your iPhone or iPad
   Enable auto-fill on your Android devices
