I'll give it another try...here goes....with picture... when I FIRST click on bookmarks there is a drop down list...that's the one I want to sort...how do you do that, because I've selected each item on the left when I Select All Bookmarks and went to the Views and set those for sorting...but the first drop down still is not sorted. Why Not? I took a screen shot ...

... This is a list of bookmarks in a 'recently bookmarked' order ... This list isn't sortable (Why Should It Be?) ...... You have to click Bookmarking Tools -> Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar ....

WHY SHOULDN'T IT BE...EVERYTHING ELSE IS! By following your suggestion, I didn't gain a thing... I don't like having to spend wheels searching for sites or items with additional time wasted with additional drop downs. Thanks any way for the suggestion

Hi Magnogreato, that is called the Library menu. It doesn't list the contents of the Bookmark Menu itself, it shows a list of the most recently added bookmarks in reverse chronological order. It is hard coded to "Recently Bookmarked." If your question really is "why", I don't know why.

However, the optional bookmarks menu button TyDraniu mentioned -- -- is much more useful than the Library button in my view (I moved the Library button to the "Overflow" list).

How do you want to search for bookmarks?

One method is to use the address bar. Type a few letters of the bookmarked site and watch for it to come up as a match in the drop-down -- bookmarks are designated with a star icon at the left.

Another method is to use the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+b) which has its own search box.

I lost a whole page of data I was going to answer your response but lost it when I clicked on Search bookmarks as it took me off this page...damn.

Any who, didn't see the method the optional bookmarks menu button TyDraniu mentioned .

thanks to all who responded...

The WHY was "why not have the Menu drop down be able to be sorted"

I search bookmarks FIRST by the drop down Menu then if I can't find it I'll go into a broader Search mode.

thanks again

These special 'recent' lists show the result of a database query, so what you see are not bookmarks in one folder. In this list you only see the pages you last bookmarked, so older bookmarks do not show in this list.

If you haven't done this yet then you can add the "Bookmarks Menu" button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list to the Navigation Toolbar via these steps:

  • click the bookshelf 57 library icon icon on the Navigation Toolbar or alternatively use the Library menu in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button New Fx Menu drop-down list
  • click Bookmarks
  • click "Bookmarking Tools", then click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
The Bookmark Menu button Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) should appear on the Navigation Toolbar.

You can also drag the Bookmarks Menu button from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar

See also "How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?":

Note that there are flexible space items to the left and right of the location bar that you can possibly remove via the right-click context menu or in customize mode.

Not sure there is anything that I can do about this issue: Using mac (OS 10.9.5) along with Firefox 71.0 I go to my bookmarks folder and drop down to my custom bookmarks sub-folder; I am able to sort my bookmarks within this folder from A-Z. Once I leave my bookmarks folder and go back up to the main webpage drop-down menu for bookmarks and navigate to my sub-folder, all of the bookmarks have reverted back to an unsorted list. While trying to sort A-Z, there isn't any sort of "save changes/update" button, so why can't I get the sort order to take permanently?

TIA
