Master Password Popup Terror

more options

Recently i set up a master password, as it was advised to me in a security article. It says, my passwords can be easily retrieved if dont use a master pasword. So well then.

Now i get endless pop up to enter my master password whenever i start firefox. And cancelling the window doesnt even work, i get mandatory pop ups until i enter it.

So what to do now? I have recent firefox, so this one popular addon which seems to address it, doesnt work because it is not written in web assembly. Maybe there is a config for it?

Not much besides turning off Firefox Sync or removing the Master Password feature, I'm afraid.

Your Firefox Sync login details are stored in the password storage system, which gets encrypted with your Master Password. So, Firefox needs you to input the Master Password when it first opens so that it can access your login information to connect you to Firefox Sync and also so that it can access the logins and passwords to sync.

Are you connected to Firefox Sync? I've heard of this happening to people connected to Firefox Sync because it's trying to sync your logins and passwords at startup. See Using a Primary Password with Sync.

This solution worked! Disable Firefox Sync.

I don't use Firefox Sync I don't use a browser on my iPhone 11. (the iPhone 11 does not play nicely with Windows 10, however.)

In Fact, I do not recall setting up Firefox Sync. I think it set itself up. Correct me if I am wrong. BUT.. if Firefox sets up Sync automatically, it should at least give a huge warning it is doing so.

Since I don't have firefox on my iPhone 11, I don't understand how Sync got activated.

Now the master password entry window pops up when I enter a site where I have stored a password, just as it did before and as I like it.

It doesn't seem possible for Firefox Sync to set itself up, since you would need to interact with it in some way to enter your login and password.

It's more likely that you set it up when you first installed Firefox and maybe have forgotten about it. Users are often advised to make a Firefox Account when Firefox gets installed and sometimes after updates.
