When I went to collect the additional info, Thunderbird had updated itself to 68.4.2 which includes a fix for:

Calendar: Various parts of the calendar UI stopped working when a second Thunderbird window opened

This fix appears to resolve the ghosting of my calendars on Thunderbird. I will add a post here if that changes.

Thunderbird 68.4.2 has NOT resolved the problem. The next time that I opened Thunderbird, the problem was back. The only workaround that works consistently is to Restart Thunderbird with Add-ons Disabled and then close it and reopen it. As long as I am in the second session, the calendar is up and working but just for that session.

The troubleshooting information is too big to fit in this reply box. I have saved it into a Word document. How do I get it to someone who can look at it?

trim it and paste it in, but do not post from the word document. It makes the text flow somehow and what appears in the forum is basically unreadable. It is all there, just formatted all over the place.

Are you using the Gdata provider addon? If so I suggest you remove it and add it again.

Yes - I am using Gdata Provider. I removed and added it back as you suggested. The restoration only lasted during the Thunderbird session. Once I closed Thunderbird and then open it again, I was right back with the original problem again. I have also tried removing both Lightning and Gdata Provider and then adding them back (Lightning first and then Gdata). I get the same one session remedy.

Thunderbird 68.4.2 Lightning 68.3.1.1

As you can see, Lightning was not updated to the corresponding 68.4.2 version. Open the Config Editor, and set the preference extensions.lastAppVersion to a value of 67.0 to force a refresh. Restart Thunderbird. Then check the version number in the Add-on Manager afterwards.

I removed the Google Provider add-on and restarted TB before doing your suggestion. Lightning did update to 68.4.2. I then re-installed the Google Provider. Version installed was 68.2.1. Calendar events show in TB's Today Pane and Calendar Tab. However, this "fix" exists only for that session of TB. The next time TB is opened, calendar events disappear from the Today Pane and are ghosted in the Calendar Tab plus basic functions moving from one month to another on Tab stop working.

PS - I don't remember hitting the solved button. I have turned it off.

Symptoms sound similar but our software configurations are different.

For several months I've been having a similar problem with Lightning, described in [/Provider UI not working reliably]

My problem is not the same but maybe related.

Thunderbird (64bit) & Lightning - 68.8.0, Windows 10 Pro 1909 (18363.836) [64bit] (version of lightning already checked)

I use a simple local calendar. It worked with Thunderbird 68.7.0.

After updating to 68.8.0 the calendar is "read-only", items are shown but I cannot create a new item. The only workaround that works consistently is to Restart Thunderbird with Add-ons Disabled and then close it and reopen it. After exiting Thunderbird and restarting it normally the calendar is read only again.

A further hint: I had the same problem before, it disappeared with an update. Details I do not remember.

Yes, this is the same problem I'm having. The fact that I'm using Provider for G-calendar is incidental. Disabling Provider does not change or resolve the problem, indicating that the the issue is with the underlying Lightning Calendar itself.

I have had inconsistent success by going to the Config Editor, searching for "extensions.installedDistroAddon.{...}", right clicking and Reset, then restarting TBird.

Other times I have removed the Lighting add-on, which requires restarting the app multiple times before it will automatically reload.

I had a similar problem with TB Calendar and Google Provider add-on. The attached post fixed my problem:

Thanks dbstraffin for the info, and glad this worked for you. For me, initially it didn't, but it now has. AND I KNOW WHY, AND I CAN REPRODUCE THE BUG!!

Sorry to be so extatic but when you've been wrestling with a seemingly mindless problem for months and you finally solve it, that feels good as we all know.

After resetting toolbars and controls, and with the calendar working as it should, I naturally reset my toolbars and controls, and in particular three things, to the way I like them. These settings are:

   In calendar, multi-week view
   In calendar, list of entries at top of screen to show "Events in current view"
   In mail Today pane, categories "Tomorrow" and "Upcoming" are expanded. 

To cut a long story short, it turns out that the "Events in current view" option for the list at the top of calendar, was causing the problem for me.

I can reproduce at will. All you have to do is select another option, such as "next 7 days". No messing about with "save mode" etc. Then re-start TB in normal mode and then problem disappears.

I will post this info to the bug report

But now there is a new problem. I cannot edit a reminder.

A reminder popped up. The reminder is set to 5 days before the actual date. I try to postpone it for 3 days. When I click the checkmark nothing happens.

Is this a related "read-only" problem?

I create most of my calendar events on my iphone that has them saved in my gmail calendar, which is then sync'd with TB+Lightning. I am able to edit and save the event on TB & iPhone when I want to add/change its reminder alert. I have not tried editing the reminder info from the reminder pop-up.

After changing the view to "next 7 days" the window "create a new date" opened and I could edit it. But when I pressed "save and close" nothing was stored. My reminders acumulated and I could not close them.

It still looked to me like the database is "read-only. I checked the windows 10 access rights but I could not detect any error.

Then I exported the calendar and imported it again. After that the problem was solved. Now I had writing access.

after update on version 78 all Google Calendar entries are greyed out and the configuration window shows that the addon is disabled or not working. looks like a similar problem? with the last version (68.10) everything was still ok.
