Page Set Up gives no options for paper size. Print Preview does not give an option but defaults to last size of paper put through printer. I.e. If I used A4 paper last & then try & print on to A5 it does not actually print like as seen on screen (print size too small etc) With other computer programs the paper size can be set. Does thundrbird have a paper size setting hidden somewhere please?

I have no idea if it can be changed for the print preview, but you should be able to change the paper size using the printer's properties dialog.

Thanks for the idea but I tried that one & Thunderbird seems to override the printer's settings In any case one needs to see what is going to be printed in Thunderbird's Print Preview box in order to know what value to set Thunderbird's box scale to.

I tried it with a virtual printer and the printout matched the properties I had set before printing. Since Thunderbird remembers the last used paper size, print to a virtual printer using the desired paper size, then reopen Print Preview. Make sure you set the printer properties from Thunderbird's Print dialog and not the Control Panel, using the button as pointed out in the screenshot. It's not ideal, but it works for now. I'll keep looking if there's a better way.

Thanks so much for this workaround which seems to solve the problem, albeit in a fidly way. If you find a better soluton I would be most grateful.
