since add-ons don't work I'd like to change color using linux mint ( display-preference ) but only the preferencepage changes color, not Thunderbird.
One can change color in Thunderbird by using 'settings-color' in Windows.( since add-ons do not work anymore )
In Mint ( display- preference - Thunderbird ) one is also supposed to be able to do this, but only the preferencepage changes color, not the Thunderbirdstarterpage ( or any other page in Thunderbird.
Am I doing something wrong ?

I'm not sure exactly which parts of TB you wish to change - perhaps you could indicate with a picture - but I'm pretty sure it can be done with css files, which are independent of the OS. See this topic for examples:
