Hi, I just built a new computer. Prior to doing so, I got my Firefox Account set up and synced on my old computer so that I could have all my passwords and bookmarks available to me on my new one. I actually began by having trouble logging into the new computer. I was definitely inputting the password correctly, because I just made the account, and ended up having to reset it after waiting much longer than the supposed 15 minutes I was locked out for. Now, the only passwords saved are what I've managed to log into while I was waiting to be allowed to try to log in.

How do I sync up the saved passwords from the old computer on to the new one? I read all available articles on the topic and none seem to have a solution that works. I really don't want to have to reset all my passwords, I just did that when I was updating the password manager on my Firefox account on my old desktop.

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Note that best is to avoid copying a full profile folder.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Thank you! I will look into those files if I continue to have issues. Unfortunately for me, I am going to have to restart the whole OS installation process etc because in trying to fix my audio being too quiet I managed to mess things up enough to redo it all. In short, I'll have a chance to try again from the top and see if it will sync how it is supposed to.
