I don't know what happened but my bookmarks have moved from being a column at the left of the firefox window to the top line visible on my screen. I have tried to fix using the instructions given but very sone the window that the instructions talk about is not what I see.

Sounds like you were using the bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B).
