I have suddenly found I can no longer open attachments by clicking on them, only by saving them elsewhere on my computer and then opening the copy. When I click on the attachment itself sometimes nothing happens, sometimes a blank page opens, sometimes (most often) a different attachment or message altogether opens. I have tried "repairing the folder" under "Properties" and I have tried deleting and reinstalling Thunderbird, but with no success. What else can I do?

have you tried disabling your anti virus program? Or clearing out the files and folders in the system temp folder? Both might be required, but simply cleaning up the temp folder might do it.

What kind of files does this happen with? If the attachments are not jpg, pdf or html, you might be seeing this bug:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1747360

In Preferences/General/Files & Attachments, are the correct apps assigned for opening content types? The associations can be reset by deleting or renaming handlers.json in the profile folder, with TB closed.

(1) Where and how do I find the system temp files please so that I can delete them? (2) The files are all pdf, jpg or docx. Clicking on the attachment normally produces a sub-menu that asks for confirmation of the correct app for opening the file. But recently the sub-menu has very often not appeared and either a blank page occurs or (most often) the attachment to a different email message opens instead.
