I have not been abe to access my Thunderbird account and e-mails since 06 January 2022.

I had not changed any of my settings, but I am repeatedly getting the same messages. Initially, I was getting a message telling me that I had to log in with my primary password, which hadn't needed to do previously, but also I was told that my Thunderbird log in password was incorrect, but I was able to use the same password to access my e-mails via PlusNet for my madasafish e-mails. I have since managed to change my primary password, which allows me to the Thunderbird e-mail page that shows me my e-mails until January 06 of this year, but it asks me to sign in at this stage, but it won't accept the original password that I normally used and that still works for PlusNet.

If you could help, I would be extremely grateful, as I do not want to swtich from Thunderbird as it is my preferred platform.

Thank you,

Byro Thomas.

'Primary Password '(also known as 'Master Password') is a password used to prevent anyone with access to your computer 'User Account' from having easy access to see stored passwords in Thunderbird. It has no other purpose. IF you have created a Master/Primary Password then when you start Thunderbird, you will asked for that password to allow Thunderbird to use the stored password.

What have you got stored in Password Manager ?

  • Menu app icon > Preferences > Privacy & Security

Passwords section

  • Click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • Click on 'Show Passwords'

For the mail account, you should see two lines one for incoming and one for outgoing smtp.

  • Right click on each line and select 'Edit Password'
  • Clear whatever is stored and carefully type the correct password.

Double check the 'Username' is also correct whilst in this area. Usually it is the full email address.

Then restart Thunderbird.

Report back on results - did you see the account names, did you see the stored passwords?
