Dell startup failure

Using Firefox on an ancient Dell with XP to run one IP security camera, It may have succumbed to a software glitch. The message now on startup, after an initial failed attempt to load operating system is: C0000218 Registry File Failure. Registry cannot load Hive File, log, or Alt (Corrupt, Absent, or Not Writable)

What do you suppose can be done to de-glithch the os loading routine, so I can keep it out of the landfill.

If I could pinpoint a browser problem I would be most of the way to analyzing and troubleshooting. My intent is to illicit as much technical supposition from cross skills as possible.
