How do I choose download preferences (where to send 'em, etc)?
When I download a photo from gmail, the download list is blank and the photo winds up buried. I want it on my desktop as a first stop.

If you look at the options menu (Firefox > Options), there should be a Downloads section under the General Tab that you can tweak to have everything you download go to the Desktop.
I'm running Firefox on Linux right now but there should be a similar menu to the screenshot that I've attached.
