This might be due to the "standard" setup. This setup will update the page when you receive email, so you don't have to. It's way faster than checking your email every 5 minutes.

I would suggest trying "basic html" setup. This is much less resource taking. You won't have the ability to use some features though.

This is not a Firefox issue if your having it in IE too. What are the specifications of your computer (Don't share anything that you wouldn't want the public to see.)

Go to Edit->Preferences->Network (Tab) Click the 'Clear Now' button.

thanks for the reply but the problem still persists!! I believe that i can only switch to the basic html setup only if i am able to reach gmail? the second option i have already tried but it doesnot helps. Infact i have tried all the options listed on this page but they haven't helped...

Try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox.
