i successfully installed zoom-page add-on, restarted firefox and tried to customize the toolbar. its icons were not in the list of those availble to drag to toolbar

Those controls should automatically appear in the Status bar, they aren't Toolbar buttons that would be in the Customize Palette.

View > Status bar = is it check-marked?
