Cannot logon automatically to websites, even with "keep me logged on" button; running Firefox 3.6.13 with Windows 7
Recently switched to using a new laptop; operating system is Windows 7. Using Firefox 3.6.13 as internet browser, "wireless" DNS connection (i.e., not dial-up). With previous PC (and previous version of Firefox) was able to log-on websites (especially my "homepage") automatically when "keep me logged in" button selected, even when Firefox closed and machine shut down then restarted, but am unable to do so now. Problem is on-going and happens at home and when "mobile" (using WLAN connection). Is the problem in Firefox, or is it in Windows 7?

The "remember me" settings are stored in cookies. Do you have Firefox or any third party utility set to delete cookies?
If cookies are not being deleted, it is possible that the file that stores cookies is corrupt. To test this open the profile folder, for details of how to access it see the profiles article. Then close Firefox and delete the cookies.sqlite file in the profile folder. This file will be re-created when you open Firefox, you can then see if it keeps you logged into sites.
Did as suggested, deleted cookies.sqlite file, still have problem. Do not have anything set to delete cookies that I know of. I don't mind manually logging on each time, but it is highly frustrating to have to do it.
- Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
- You need an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep that cookie, especially for secure websites and if you let cookies expire when Firefox closes
- Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and password exceptions.
- Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode
- You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
- To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
Firefox 3.6.13 has no option for cookie exceptions under Tools>Options>Privacy. I also have not set anything for deleting cookies or history automatically, period.
To see all the History and Cookie settings, select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
As stated, nothing is selected to clear cookies, history or any such. Has anyone ever had this problem with 3.6.13 while running Wndows 7 OS?
I'm having precisely the same problem...with the exception that I'm running Windows 2000 (same version of Firefox as you, however).
I have also noticed that 3.6.13 and Windows 7 can give a problem with logins. As far as I can see all cookies are stored as they should and I also believe cookies are sent to the server. But for some applications, such as my own one written in PHP, it doesn't work. I am redirected to the login page anyway. However, just by erasing the login part of the URL and reload the page I get in. So it's almost working after all. Something is not happening in the right order? When I try the same code and the same version of Firefox, but use my local WAMP Server it works fine! So who is to blame?
You can try to analyze the HTTP headers with the Live HTTP Headers extension.
