Ever since installing Firefox 4, the web-based (Java) online course material my university uses is not loading properly! I don't want to switch to Google Chrome, please fix this! (Worked fine with Firefox 3.6)

I can log in fine and view my courses. I can even go into the course folders and such which means that Java is working. When I click on a link to open a Powerpoint or .doc (or any file for that matter) that the professor has posted online it won't load! It looks like something is happening in the loading bar but then it just goes away and the page is white. This never happened with Firefox 3.6, so I've had to switch to Chrome to access my course materials.

Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

If it fails regardless, you can try changing the user agent like this:

  1. In the location bar at the top, type: about:config and hit Enter.
  2. In the filter at the top, copy/paste the following: general.useragent.override. This will display a blank page.
  3. Right click anywhere in the blank area and choose "New" and then "String". In the dialog box which appears, copy/paste general.useragent.override again and click OK. The dialog box will remain on screen, but you'll see that name appear above where it previously said "Enter Preference Name".
  4. Next, copy/paste the following: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
  5. Click OK and then go to File | Exit. Restart Firefox again and see if it works.
  6. I've uploaded a screenshot for you to illustrate the steps above.

Hopefully, your uni's webmaster will update their site to work with Firefox 4.0 soon.
