How come the password manager isn't working even if the settings are correctly set?

I have recently reverted back to version 3.6.17 from 4 cause version 4 was unstable. Now that I have the older version (more stable) the password manager doesn't offer to save passwords anymore even when the settings are correctly set. I note that I have had virus' and rootkits removed (maybe they did some damage) and I have cleaned my system with a registry cleaner (maybe it removed some settings through it) and a clean install has not fixed this.

Do you still see the names and passwords in the Firefox Password Manager?

Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Mozilla should make it clear that private browsing mode disables the password manager. Thank you.

The Firefox Password Manager is not completely disabled in Private Browsing mode. You can still use it to fill saved names passwords in form on a web page. Firefox won't autofill the name and password, so you have to type the name or double click the name field. You can't save new passwords while in PB mode, you can only do that in normal mode.
