when i clicked on the green + arrow at the top,( to open a new tab) in firefox 4, it automatically opened to the new tab. i downloaded firefox 5, and now when i click the green arrow, it stays on my current page and the new tab just opens, then i have to go up and click on it to open that tab. how do i make it automatically open? also, i tried in the preferences, checking the box that says "when i open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" and that only works when i open a link, not just a blank page.

The "+" button should switch to the new tab by default.

Do you have any tab-related add-ons? If so, they might be slightly incompatible with Firefox 5. You could check here:

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Add-ons

I'd start with the Extensions.
