When I right click, select "Save as", then select where to save the image, it seems to download, as it shows as finished in "Downloads" screen. But when I right click the file on the "Downloads" screen, "Open" and "Open containing folder" are both non-selectable. If I go to the folder I chose to download the image to, it isn't there either.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"

I'm only getting this problem with Firefox. I opened Internet Explorer and was able to download. I then disabled my av and tried within FF with no success.

Ok, Ive uninstalled FF completely, restarted my laptop, downloaded and reinstalled FF7, only to get the same friggin issue!!! I don not have this problem with IE, and I don't have it on my desktop pc running an older version of 'fox. This is not a pc problem, it is an issue with Firefox!!! I've attached a picture to show what it looks like after I try downloading something.

Same problem here. It's not an anti-virus issue -- it is a Firefox issue. I used both IE and Opera and no problem whatsoever. Opera is very fast too.

I found a solution: When you right click to save the file, put the extension in. For instance, if it's a jpg file, click into the filename area and add ".jpg" and it will save the file.
