Why does Firefox frequently spin at (Not Responding) when navigating, then finally load after a delay?

I just updated to Windows 7 and Firefox 7. This has been happening navigating within the mozilla.com site, yahoo, and white pages (where I've noticed it so far). I will click to open something, and it will spin, and then the top line will say "Firefox Not Responding". Then after a while it usually loads. But sometimes it takes a minute or longer. I checked on Internet Explorer, and there is no delay for those sites.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.

Try to decrease the value of the pref network.http.max-connections from 256 to 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

I changed the value to 30, and it made a difference immediately. But the next day (and since then) it has been an issue again with most sites. It's so slow I'm thinking about switching to another browser, which I would prefer not to do. Any other suggestions?
