All of a sudden any searches using google or bing with firefox resulted in being redirected to googleads.l.doubleclick.net & a server unavailable message. I ran malware software and got clean results. If I run firefox in safe mode this does not happen so I disables ALL of the addons and tried again. However, even with addons disabled I am still redirected to googleads.l.doubleclick.net. Suggestions or ideas, anyone?

Google redirect virus is challenging to get rid of due to its capability to hide deep inside the operating system as well as its potential to eliminate traces and footprints on how it got inside the computer. As of nowadays, not a single security application in the industry can guarantee 100% protection from this infection. This explains, why your pc got infected even having a safety software installed.

Some computer users know that Google redirect virus is just not a virus, but in fact a rootkit. Rootkit infections unlike other virus, spyware or trojan infections are really difficult to get rid of. In most cases, google redirect virus rootkit is seen related to Trojans which makes it a lot more deadly. In accordance with a 2011 report, Google redirect virus have currently infected 45,00,000 computers worldwide, out of which 1/3rd is from US.

Some symptoms that you are having this virus on your PC:

  • Browsers freeze
  • Pages not loading at all
  • Google/Bing/Yahoo searches redirected to malicious site/s
  • Some programs won’t respond
  • Internet connection brakes itself
  • Terrible adds popping on visited webpage/s

If you have these symptoms on your Computer, I suggest using safe and respected software program as the 1 I've provided below. The Google redirect virus removal tool deals with malware infections that lead to Google redirect virus symptoms and are so difficult to detect and fix.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

This is NOT an answer the-edmeister!!!!!!

WTF?

Obviously there is doubleclick spyware running that is attacking a flaw in Firefox that started with the latest update to Firefox.

Resetting it is not a permanent solution... it might buy minutes, hours, or days..... maybe even weeks... But I doubt it.

Why would Firefox starting to redirect search result links through doubleclick's servers have ANYTHING to do with resetting so much of Firefox?

That sounds like taking the easy (for you) way out...

For us it's a nightmare... meaning we have to reinstall our addons, reconfigure our options, and meanwhile there is an exploit for Firefox that allows a SPECIFIC advertiser to SPAM our search results.

Or is there something you are not telling us?

This would not be the first time there has been a search redirection in Firefox....

This JUST started happening to me tonight... (9-26-2012 around 2:30-3AM PST)

I have only been on Newegg.com, very little Amazon.com, and computerworld.com....

I have NoScript installed and up to date... as well as adblock plus with easylist...

This behaves EXACTLY like the previous firefox exploit... in a google search I can go forward and back a few times and eventually get the intended page the link shows in the google results (the hover shows the doubleclick page until the correct results eventually show up if enough forward and back navigation is performed (2-5 times))

I'm sorry you guys are fighting, but the-edmeister, I have a related question. I hope you don't mind if I use this thread.

My question is similar in the respect that, if I do a search (doesn't matter if I use the included search engine, the Google front page or if I type a keyword in the URL bar), the results link gets redirected to some stupid site page (eg. http://managedownloads.com/Firefox/). I know that's not a legit Mozilla download page for Firefox. The link I clicked on in this example is http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/821240-help-firefox-keeps-getting-redirected.html. When I tried a second time, I was correctly directed to the site. Why would it do that?

Also, I remember when I could put a word in the URL (like google for example) and Firefox would auto-complete a URL for me (www.google.com). What happens now is that it send me to a yahoo search page with results for a search on Google. Pardon the language, but... WTF?!

Any ideas on that? Thanks in advance.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
