So!! Help me Firefox Community!!!

It sounds like you have a Third-Party Toolbar that has taken over your Search Engine, Home Page, and/or the Default New Tab Page. Fortunately this can be remedied easily:

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
  4. Click the Remove button.
  5. Click Restart now if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

After Firefox restarts, install the Search Reset Tool. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.

Did this start after any updates or new installations? Often "free" software is actually adware supported software which bundles in unwanted extras.

[1] The first place to check is your Extensions. Disable ALL extensions, and only spare the ones so vital that you'd rather watch TV than browse the internet without them. The restart Firefox.

[2] Next, reset your home page as desired here:

[3] Third, you can reset your "new tab" page in a slightly more complicated way.

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the filter box, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter the desired value:

(i) Page thumbnails (default)

browser.newtab.url = about:newtab

(ii) Blank tab

browser.newtab.url = about:blank

(iii) Built-in Firefox home page

browser.newtab.url = about:home

(iv) Any other page

browser.newtab.url = full URL to the page

[4] While you're in about:config, type or paste v9 into the filter box and zap any settings where it doesn't belong by right-clicking and choosing Reset.

[5] Finally, you can check for a user.js file which might revert your settings.

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

If you find a user.js file in that folder, it contains custom settings that could override your changes. Unless you set them up yourself, you probably don't need them, so just rename the file to something like userjs.old or baduser.js (etc.).

Alternately, you could open the file in a text editor and see what's in there and edit it manually.


Hopefully that will shut it down. If the changes do come back after that, then your malware/spyware scanner probably missed some external software.

Dear timc, it seems that I misinformed you about my porblem. I should have underline the situation. My problem is not "search engine toolbar" problem. It is not an add(-on) either. But yes, it came with free software.

Dear jscher2000, I've tried everytihng you said. Not not definetly not the solution.

I really am greatful for your attepmts, but I need new ideas. Any other ideas.

Hi lomex, I need more feedback on the results of those steps.

First, the home page. When you viewed your setting, was it what you wanted or had it been changed? If it was already correct or if you changed it to the correct setting, then clicked the Home button, was your setting ignored?

If you are using the built-in Firefox home page (about:home), what parts have been changed -- the whole page or just the destination of the search box?

Second, the new tab page. If you press Ctrl+t to open a new tab, do you get a different page than what you specified in about:config? What page did you specify and what page do you get?

Try to reset v9.com related prefs on the about:config page.

  • Open the about:config page via the location bar and do a search for v9 via the Search bar at the top of the about:config page.
  • Reset all v9.com related prefs that appear bold (user set) via the right-click context menu to their default values.

Dear friends, First of all Thanks for your efforts. I have already saved my homepage. It was textbook rescue. Homepage can be restore by using options-setting. Tabs are my problem. jscher2000 taught me to use about:config page. I wrote newtabs on that page's filter however everything was ordinary. I have searched for V9, search engine appeared. And then I have reset its settings. But my problem still standing.

When I press Ctrl+t to open a new tab, link below as a new page:

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

For me, removing ProxyTool from Addons has worked as solution. None other solutions above seemed to work. Additionally, remove all v9 entries using about:config.
