sent mail going to inbox, all replies as separate emails
downloaded thunderbird to new computer. three big problems: 1 - address book has been lost 2 - all sent mail is going both to sent mail folder ans also to inbox 3 - all replies and conversations are showing up as separate emails instead of being part of one email thread. i.e., it is a total mess. I have configured the settings correctly I believe. what is going on?

1. Address book is on whatever computer you left it on. This is software installed on a computer, not a web service like gmail.
2. Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > copies and folders. Is sent mail being cc:ed or copied to morethan one place.
3. Sounds like normal standard mail to me. Perhaps you used to use the conversations add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/?src=ss which makes everything look a total mess, just like gmail does.
Thank you for your response. I had two computer hard drives die in the same week. I copied files onto a dvd but when I input the dvd only some files can be retrieved, and none of them are my address book from thunderbird. Re sent mail ending up in the inbox, I have tried it several ways but at no time have I cc'ed mail anywhere. I can't figure out why it is doing this. Should I uninstall it and reinstall it? Could it be corrupted?
Is the abook file on the DVD or not? Have you reset the read only attribute on all the files you copied off the DVD? They are unusable with it set.
What settings appear in Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > copies and folders.
Uninstalling is a complete waste of time and usually makes things worse. I am at a loss why people continually want to do it as a fix.
I don't recall seeing a read only anywhere , In settings I have : place a copy in either sent folder or other, then place replies in the folder of the message being replied to. ( I tried checking this and not checking it - made no difference) then Cc and Bcc which I have never checked. The add-on you linked does not work on my edition of thunderbird.
Hmmmm...... perhaps if you took the time to read instructions.
Did you save the add-on XPI file and install it in Thunderbird like the instructions said. Or try and install it in Firefox, get the inevitable failure and complain here that it is not compatible. The web site offers instructions. Perhaps if you read these. http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html That add-on works with the current version.
"You don't recall any read only" Right click any file you copied off the DVD. Select properties and there you have a read only flag.
Do you have anti virus software running? Disable any part of it involving SPAM, TRASH Phishing and email.
no anti-virus running. I will try your suggestions. thank you
