Sorry, the Spaces and Separators are gone from the default User Interface.

If you place the cursor between the Location Bar and the Search Bar, and move it slightly until the the double-head arrow appears, you can drag the Location Bar smaller and the Search Bar larger.

since i do not use the google search bar and have removed it from the header your solution does not apply to my problem.

Take a look at this extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer - which restores those Spaces, among many other "retro" type UI elements.

Or you can set the size of the "container" via CSS rules. Use code like this in userChrome.css to set a max-width for those bars:

Note if there are other elements on the Navigation Toolbar that have a flex attribute like the search bar that they will automatically take empty space.

Do you have a specific reason that you want to shorten the location/address bar?

You can still change the relative size of the location bar and the search bar by placing the mouse between the two bars if they are next to each other and drag the resizer icon with the left mouse button pressed.

i want to shorten the address bar just for looks,so i can see my theme. don't need an address bar a mile long.

You can make some modification with code in the userChrome.css to have some transparency on the URL bar and possibly increase the height of the navigator toolbox.

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

• Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

• Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
• Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userChrome.css file in the chrome folder (file name is case sensitive)
• Paste the code in the userChrome.css file in the editor window
• Make sure that the userChrome.css file starts with the default @namespace line
• Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userChrome.css. Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userChrome.css.txt file

are you people nuts??? i don't want to take a chance on screwing up my computer by changing all these codes. i just want a simple way to put spaces in my header to make the address bar very small so i can enjoy my theme.---- like i used to be able to do with previous versions on firefox.

You will have to use the above mentioned Classic Theme Restorer extension to have a space item in the Customize palette like posted above. Current Firefox versions no longer have this possibility.

i installed classic theme restorer and it does what i want as far as changing the size of the location bar.

but it does not save the changes, as soon i close out firefox and reopen it , it has reverted back to the way it was before i made my changes.

how do i get classic theme restorer to save my changes?

Without wanting to belittle or diminish the contribution of this forums supporters, the constant "try classicthemerestorer" and css codes tips are missing the point.

While it is good for us more experienced users to know and use these(though I'm weary of too many add-ons), the problem and fact of the matter is:

Firefox is a castrated version of its former self and we all need to make the devs painfully aware of what an epic facepalm it is to introduce a quote: "more customizable" version featuring less customization than previous iterations...

(leaving the UI completely aside, they should not have removed those functionalities/customizations we all loved and that set FF aside from the others !!)
