I am running OSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro, and two weeks ago, while connecting via a personal hotspot, I was experiencing total system freezes and crashes after using Firefox. I fixed the bigger problem by noting in Console that there was an unresponsive program repeatedly trying to launch a component. This program was a DirectTV app that I hadn't used or opened in a couple of years, but which suddenly started trying to launch with Firefox. After that, I noticed that, even though I am no longer getting total a freeze/crash, EVERY time I use Firefox, Console repeatedly (every few seconds), logs the following message:

7/25/15 6:44:19 PM [0x0-0x1d01d].org.mozilla.firefox 2015-07-25 18:44:19.612 firefox[242:903] unrecognized button type 7

I have had no luck in any search engine, or on mozilla's help page, or on Apple's support page, finding what this message is referring to. I just ran update on Firefox, and on restart, Console again displayed the error message. Any thoughts? Anybody else getting this message?

I have updated Flash (and, yes, restarted the computer), and there are no graphics driver updates available for my computer, and the message still shows up. Whatever is causing this message to be generated does not seem to currently be interfering with the functioning of Firefox or any other operation, but there is still, clearly, something about Firefox that is generating that message.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Started Firefox in Safe Mode...same message. Started computer in Safe Mode then started Firefox...same message AND Firefox displayed only a blank white window body (no toolbars/etc other than top menu header (file/edit/view/etc) and red/orange/green window buttons at top left). Even tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode with computer in Safe Mode...you guessed it...same message. Tomorrow I'm going to try running disk utility to verify/repair permissions, just for fun.

Thanks for your help...I really appreciate the suggestions, but nothing ultimately worked. When I ran disk utility, I was informed that, even though I could repair permissions, it was unable to verify or repair the volume (hard drive), since it was "corrupt" (and even though everything was, actually, working, or appeared to be). After backing up to Time Machine, I decided to upgrade to 10.10, thinking that, perhaps, disk utility would then be able to handle the repair. Long story short, no, it couldn't, and the whole machine seemed to be lost in some OS Neverland where neither the new or old OS could boot. Even the Apple Genius couldn't fix it without erasing the volume, deleting the partition, creating a new partition, and then doing a clean install. The good news: I now no longer get the message regarding the nefarious "button type 7." The bad news: now we may never know exactly what "button type 7" is.
