did backup for my bookmarks as Firefox suggested but can't open it to see if the bookmarks are there??? Thank you.

While you can view it in a text editor, or drag and drop it on an open Firefox tab, a JSON format file consists of very densely packed text that will definitely cause eyestrain. I'm not sure there is a convenient way to see what it will turn back into when restored.

Is that a manually created .json backup or an automatically created compressed .jsonlz4?

You can open a .json file in the Scratchpad (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer). Click the "Pretty Print" button to format the file for readability.
