When I started my computer and went to use T-bird it asked to install a add-on. After doing so I had to restart the computer. T-bird then started up and had a listing of features which I cant remove! Now I cant see my messages or get new email. The update was about a calendar (I think). Should I give up on T-bird? Obviously I cant get email so please respond to slinkmanJ@yahoo.com. Thanks

As of Thunderbird version 38 Lightning, the Thunderbird calendar extension, is bundled with Thunderbird. Upon upgrading to Thunderbird 38.x from version 31.x users are being prompted to allow or deny the installation of Lightning.

If you don't need or don't want Lightning you can remove it via the Add-ons Manager. Tools (Alt-T) - Add-ons - Extensions

Now I cant see my messages or get new email.

This certainly isn't related to Lightning. Make sure Thunderbird isn't blocked by a personal firewall.
