This is prob a Adobe problem rather than a FF problem though......Please Try: Use Adobe Flash Uninstaller and then after if use a registry cleaner do so then d/load after a reboot a new copy and install. https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html These instructions are NOT applicable to Flash Player for Internet Explorer on Windows 8 and later, or for Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

I would prob be negligent if not add that if this does not work to try repeat the uninstall then a registry cleanup and then a FF Refresh https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings then reinstall Flash.

I did everything suggested except cleaning the registry and there was no improvement. Because the computer is old with an old operating system and an excellent sound system, problems in cleaning the registry could result in having to junk the computer. My Firefox browser has had many upgrades and I wonder if the problem is in the browser? It is the only working browser on the computer which has to be considered if Firefox is uninstalled and then reinstalled unless it can be installed over the existing Firefox correcting any issues in the existing Firefox. I would appreciate any further suggestions to resolve this issue.

What player is used?

Is the Shockwave Flash plugin used or the HTML5 media player?

You can check via the right-click context menu of the player area what kind of media player is used. A Flash based player shows a context menu with the Flash version.

In my earlier reply I had made a mistake, it is HTML5 media player. As I understand it YouTube videos use HTML5 media player and my updated Firefox 45 also uses HTML5 media player as the default, so one would think that this is a solid interface between YouTube and Firefox. Evan with Shock wave flash disabled, YouTube videos still play with lots of 1or 2 second interruptions Steps that I have taken to find the problem are remove Norton 360, diagnostic check of the computer hardware, add virtual memory and lots of plug-ins and the problem does not go away. The computer only has 512 MG of RAM. Would more RAM solve the problem? As the computer was assembled in 2002, Any comments on the possibility of corrupted files in the registry causing the problem would be appreciated.

Update to Firefox 45.0 which was released yesterday.

Open up Help > About Firefox and Firefox 44 should find and install the 45.0 update.

iirc, a Bug for "skipping audio" was fixed for Firefox 45.0.

I updated to Firefox 45.0 but there was no change in the 1 to 2 second interruptions in sound from YouTube videos

This appears to be a difficult problem to resolve. Consequently, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Before doing what you suggested, I ran a diagnostic check on the computer and all systems passed and I updated the drivers. I used the latest version of CC Cleaner to clean the Registry and then followed your instructions. It was only marginally better as there were still lots of sound interruptions. The sound with the YouTube videos is very good, there is just these interruptions in the sound. I just played a cd in the computer and it played without any sound problems at all, which would suggest that there are no hardware problems contributing to this issue. It would seem that the issue is associated with YouTube Firefox link. Is there any special software that you are are aware of that could find the problem? I have the latest version of Firefox which is suppose to have a patch to deal with these types of problems. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.
