When I attempt to set up my calendar, which setting do I use? Can i just pic iCal or do I need to figure out which to select?
Also, when I attempt to set up my calendar, which setting do I use? Can I select ical because the description of ical sounds like what I want, or is there some email or server setting connected to my computer/internet connection that dictates which setting to use?

The Calendar provider dictates what setting to use.
Whose calendar are you trying to synchronize with?
For instance, Google Calendar supports two interfaces; the generic CalDAV, and their own proprietary interface for which you need the Provider For Google Calendar.
