Firefox nightly has started using around 4Gb memory. Looking through the memory information in Troubleshooting, I find this under the heading "Other Measurements"

134,217,727.94 MB (100.0%) -- address-space
├──134,216,156.60 MB (100.0%) ── free(segments=195)
└────────1,571.34 MB (00.00%) ++ (2 tiny)

Does Firefox have a memory leak of poor garbage collection for the free space to be almost 100% of the allocation i this area and the space used to keep creeping up. A daily reboot is required.

What I do see is E-bay pages having loads and loads of Google advertising frames. Like they are created and never released but new ones created latter.

Do you have any extensions installed that might contribute to this memory issue? Does the report show what accidentally is taking up that memory? Did you try the buttons on the about:memory page to free memory?

There are other things that need attention.

You have multiple Flash plugins.

  • Shockwave Flash 25.0 r0
  • Shockwave Flash 28.0 r0

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.

You can uninstall the current Flash player version and (re)install the latest Flash version.

See this about uninstalling Flash players:

Note that this will remove all installed Flash players.

You can download the latest Flash player plugin for Firefox on this page. See "Still having problems".n*http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html

Flash is disabled, not ask to run, set to never. That along with the unsubmitted crash reports that will neither submit nor stop reminding me are just a fact of life as far as I an concerned. Sure I have a couple of add-ons. I will disable them and see if Firefox starts to behave.

I am not looking for a manual solution. My problem is if I leave Firefox in sleep mode to long my computer simply goes to god. Thunderbird hangs, as it does on every Firefox update, until the update is complete. The memory starts to resemble Firefox consumption and a forced quit becomes required. But all of this appears to start with Firefox memory problems.

Given the appalling state of the Firefox editor as revealed by using this forum. (the system caret disappears, the keyboard simply stops responding etc) I might just go to chrome for a while and see if things improve generally from doing so. At least when I use that I do not get these site not found errors all the time for sites that I am simply refreshing.

In response to westend, who appears to have removed their comment, Firefox was installed about version 2 and has upgraded and relocated to a couple of new machines over the years but has been on this machine for 5 years. All install packages have been sourced from the Mozilla web site.
