I am not seeing a "write" or "compose" button on my page
When I log in my email goes to "inbox" and I am not seeing a write or compose on the task bar above.

then it may be you have no toolbar visible. Do you see chat? or addressbook?
If not perhaps right click in the windows header beside the X icons for windows maximizing etc and ensure the three toolbars are selected. If that does not work for you, press the alt key to see the menu bar and select the view menu and ensure all the toolbars are selected. Personally I have them all including the main menu bar visible.
If the other icons I mentioned are present, right click the toolbar, select customize and drag whatever icons to the toolbar you want there.
