As the title says, after updating thunderbird is trying to get me to set up an account and will not display the current accounts in my default profile.

The profile exists, is where it should be, with all the data from years of use its the only profile its correctly listed in profiles.ini its selected and the default in "about profiles" and is stated to be the default profile in use renamed the global-messages-db to force a db rebuild, no change used the profile selection option (thunderbird.exe -p) no help there, there's only the one profile there are no addons installed, its a vanilla install and always has been

I'm at my wits end here, please help

There are several recent reports like this. Many are due to Avast, but if that doesn't apply, there are cases where TB loses track of the profile. Indicate if you're an Avast/AVG user.

yes avast is running on the machine

I also did look the perfs.js file and it seemed in order, and it was the only one.

Look for the prefs.js file that was quarantined by Avast:

yup, it sure was avast.

it had quarantined the perf.js file multiple times over the course of 2 minutes. I restored and made an exception for the first instance of quarantine and now it works.

Thanks so much, this was hard enough doing it remotely with someone who isn't a power user. This forum is great for information, but not so great at finding it, I read many articles what were years old and never even saw a recent post about this issue.
