I'm saving several Firefox profile folders for backup, some are plain copies of the profiles, some are created via the FEBE extension:since they take a lot of space, can I compress them with a program like say 7zip? Will they be usable?

FEBE backups are already compressed. In a FEBE folder, right-click on a file and choose to open (.fbu extension) with 7zip (choose 7zip > Open archive); you will see the size and packed size listed. If 7zip is not on your system right-click context menu, open the 7zip program, click Tools > Options, check your settings on the 7zip tab. The .xpi files (extensions) are already compressed also. Space saving by re-compressing those files would most likely be minimal, if any. Maybe clearing large image or movie files or some other items off your disk (delete or backup to CD/DVD) would be more beneficial.

You can compress them to save space. If you need to restore a profile you can extract the files and they will be usable.
